Why is Self-Care & Social Support Necessary?
Sexual abuse/assault
- 82% of all victims under 18 are female. (One in 9 girls and 1 in 20 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault.)
- Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general
population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
(3% of girls were age 10 or younger at the time of their first rape/victimization, and 30% of girls were between the ages of 11 and 17.)
Bullying
- In 2019, a higher percentage of female students than of male
students ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the school year. A higher percentage of female students than of male students ages 12-18 reported being the subject of rumors, being made fun of, called names or insulted, and excluded from activities on purpose.
Trauma
- Child trauma occurs more than you think. More than two-thirds of children reported at least 1 traumatic event by age 16.
Potentially events include:
-Neglect
-Community or school violence
-National disasters or terrorism
-Commercial sexual exploitation
-Sudden or violent loss of a loved one
-Serious accidents or life-threatening illness
-Witnessing or experiencing domestic violence
-Military family - related stressors (e.g. , deployment , parental l loss or injury)
